Athens-based sculptor David Hostetler will be in New York Wednesday and unveil his largest piece ever shown in public. To top it off, financial wizard Donald Trump will be there to help him celebrate.

Hostetler, will present "The Duo" to the Trump International Hotel and Tower. The 13-foot bronze casting depicts two women formed to appear like trees standing parallel, elbow to elbow.

The project was commissioned as a memorial to the late Dan Galbreath, a Columbus real estate developer and philanthropist who was a partner in the Trump hotel. Galbreath, whose family has long been associated with Ohio University, wanted to express his Ohio roots by commissioning a Hostetler statue for the building.

Speaking Tuesday from his Nantucket, Mass. studio, Hostetler, 70, said the unveiling is not the pinnacle of his career, but marks the beginning.

"I'm just starting," he said. "I plan to continue to do women (statues) until I die. It just keeps getting better and better."

An OU art teacher for 38 years, Hostetler began studies as an engineer in 1944. A leg wound while training for the army during World War II put him in a hospital bed next to a painter. Hostetler called the incident and his change of interest to art "very fortuitous."

Women have long been the focus of his works, Hostetler said. He takes inspiration from Asherah, a goddess of trees worshipped by early Canaanites and Hebrews. As a child, Hostetler said he revered his mom.

A cocktail and dinner with Trump and other colleagues, friends and family of the late Galbreath will be part of the unveiling.

What will Hostetler say to the world-famous Trump? "Probably something about women," Hostetler said. "I'll tell him those two women in the statue are really Ivana and Marla."
