Nantucket Today: Celebrating 100 Years of David Hostetler

David Hostetler would have turned 100 years old this December, and Nantucket Today has marked the centennial with a feature by Quinn Frankel. The piece looks at Forest and Form: Wood Sculptures by David Hostetler, now open at the Hostetler Gallery on Centre Street — a retrospective gathered by Susan Hostetler that spans works from 1962 through 2015.

Best known internationally for his bronze figures, David returns here to the carved wood that formed the foundation of his practice and the starting point for many of those bronzes. Frankel traces a career of nearly 69 years, and the lifelong dialogue with nature, mythology, materiality and art history that ran through it — from his arrival on Nantucket in 1970 to the gallery he opened on Old South Wharf in 1983.
