This sculpture was cast from a pottery mold from 1948. Even in 2005, the sculpture feels fresh and dynamic. A great fit with primitive, Deco or traditional interiors. She has the feel and presence of a full-figure sculpture. Inspired by the sculptor Archipenko.This is the moment Hostetler began moving beyond functional pottery and into sculpture. Still working in clay, he started shaping the female form — the subject that would define his next six decades. Torso is his earliest known sculpture and a rare glimpse of the young artist testing boundaries and discovering the voice that would become unmistakably his.
I can cast it and use a mottled blue patina to look more closely to the ceramic Torso he made in 1948.
